Aquascreen
AquaScreen is the best available benthic barrier
material available today for meeting your bottom barrier needs. Aquatic
Biotechnologies, Inc. is proud to be a retailer of AquaScreen.
The installation of AquaScreen bottom barrier provides waterfront property
owners the positive, long-term control of unwanted weeds which interfere with
their use and enjoyment of the water. AquaScreen works by preventing
aquatic plants with roots from getting sunlight, thus significantly hindering
growth. After positive control has been achieved at one location, the
AquaScreen can be relocated to another location to control the weeds at the new
location. Minimal maintenance is required to keep your AquaScreen in top
condition.
AquaScreen can be installed by homeowners in shallow waters without special
equipment. SCUBA diving gear is required in deeper water
installations. Underwater securing devices are required to keep the
barrier from shifting underwater. Detailed installation instructions and
support will be provided to purchasers of AquaScreen from Aquatic Weed Control.
AquaScreen is denser than water, making it sink and preventing it from floating
out of position. In addition, the barrier has excellent
"breathing" capabilities which allow gases from decomposing biomass
to pass through the barrier and escape to the surface. Other products
used for bottom barriers to not have the same gas passing characteristics as
AquaScreen. AquaScreen is durable and tear-resistant. AquaScreen
material can last up to seven years if maintained property and installed
securely.
While some companies sell Geotextile products as an inexpensive substitute,
they are not very gas permeable unless mentioned. They create a complete
different sediment environment, from oxygenated to anoxic, killing all the
benthic food web. Only one Geotextile is known to allow gas to escape. However,
it is a needle punched Geotextile and holes are so small that they tend to
block up within the first 3 weeks. This traps gas under the barrier and thereby
pulling the material up to the surface. This is called a bottom barrier and is
not allowed in many parts of the U.S. Aquascreen is a bottom semi-barrier and
is not a fabric. It does not change the state of the benthic environment.
AquaScreen comes in rolls seven feet wide and 100 feet long. The rolls
weigh about 34 pounds and can easily be shipped to customers with minimal
cost. Other materials come on rolls 15 feet wide, are 360 feet long, and
weigh over 250 pounds, making them impractical for simple homeowner
installations. In addition, sand bags are needed to keep the barrier
underwater, as the other materials float!
